View down over road winding up through gorge

Tuesday 14th June 1983

We are late getting up. I had been lying in bed awake for what seemed like ages but I had thought it was still early. Now it is nearly 10am. It doesn't take us long to get up and ready to leave.

Petrified logs in painted desert

Wednesday 15th June 1983

We have a long way to go today so we get off to an early start. We drive along in silence, each of us in our own thoughts. Being in the company of only one other person 24 hours a day is a new experience and we have run out of things to say. The silence is giving us a break.

Ruined pueblo at El Morro

Thursday 16th June 1983

We leave Navajo at a few minutes past 8:00 with the intention of arriving in Albuquerque in the early evening. That should give us plenty of sight seeing time on the way. From a review of the map and route we have identified a number of potentially interesting stops on the way: Zuni Pueblo, El Morro National Monument, the lava fields and the ice caves.

Murals on walls of kiva

Friday 17th June 1983

We have got ahead of our planned schedule and decide to take a leisurely day touring the Indian Pueblos. We set off early and arrive at the Coronado (State) Monument before it has opened, but this is of little consequence as admission is free and the visitors centre is closed for renovation.
